this was again one o our open canvas event.

Quick Impression

This is from memory,It was a long drive down to Malwan.Enjoyed a short holiday with kids on the beach ,snorkeling and boat rides.Probably next time I will be able to paint.

Another Open Canvas..

Open canvas is what we call our this activity.There was live music going on .Derek Julian improvising on his guitar and we six artists painted six canvases enjoying his music.
The idea is ..I had a very uncertain image of what I wanted to do and as the music started I want to let the music dictate the colors and strokes..on the other hand Derek was improvising looking at the canvas being painted.It wasn't meant to find any parallel between the two mediums but to just get inspired by each other. As for me it was Euphoria defined..

Saturation level increased to extreme right and
whoosh...it is Andy Warhol effect. is it not..

Bike

this was parked in the courtyard of a building .you can see one tree still standing in between the 4 concrete walls constraining it from 4 sides.
A little shower makes a huge difference..in fact all the difference.

What am I trying to do here,what is my focus and the visual statement..a desire to paint loose and abstract..pleasing large audience..painting light......coffee.. or..just shutpnpaint..

I don't usually paint sunsets,whenever I tried somehow painting looks too melodramatic for my liking .This one mix media ,I am quiet happy with the look..what say..

examination point

we usually have our last day session of my workshop at this spot.A nice corner opp University building ,lot of us can sit together and paint.This is usually the outdoor session of my watercolor course and I insist students to work without looking at what I am doing.a sort of exam for them
coincidentally the building we paint happens to be a corner of exam department of Univ.
the paper used here is montval which is bad, slippery paper made for watercolor.the bad paper sometimes challenges to bring the better in you.

Villege n Nasik

Almost a travel back in time.It is going to be more and more "not" possible to see anything like this.
Though I have painted this one in my usual style I have very carefully added lots of details like tiled roof(you can even count them)bricks and little stones on the ground.
Details is a tricky thing..they can damage more than contribute, many a times.
Yet I believe as long as the tonal mass is not disturbed they can add up as texture ind interest..

painted in three colors as you see the three awnings in red ,yellow and blue.
the rest part is all neutrals mixed these three. a good harmony ,is it not..

some one long back said In every artist's studio you will find studies are often better than finished paintings .sadly true or not but sometimes if we are too happy with the study we never want to do a finished painting

this is rather an old sketch done on the spot.digging some old stuff to remind myself. outdoor sketching is good fun,need not aim for a painting all the time..

Cartoon man

Painted from a photo from Rajastan a friend of mine had clicked.The man in the picture ,I am sure is very learned and wise but somehow his very long face and look made me call him a cartoon man.
the paper used was HP and so smooth that my brush would almost slip on it.on the other hand this slippery challenge made me to be on my tows.I am happy .
S.P. was good challenge..now I enjoy painting faces even more...portrait ..no big deal.

these are relatively better attempts..
I had tough time painting this one as my model was too unstable.He constantly kept looking up and down ,moving his head to and fro not to mention squinting his eyes.
my wife did not say"He looks almost but not quiet unlike me".In fact she agreed he looks quiet familiar,..confused and lost.
hats off to those who have painted "him" more successfully.(him?..who..oh him)

Being mostly the urban stuck,I am more of an architectural landscape ,city scape artist.

I was a bit unsure about the sucess of these two attempts. wondering either there is no object as such to paint or just one tree as an object..?on the other hand a painting is all about shapes color and tone and finding beauty of pattern and a feeling that it can generate.

PANHALA EUPHORIA

Had a great plien(chk spelling) air watercolor workshop recently at "Panhala". Theplace,the weather and light was just perfect. Once again there was a revelation that nothing in the world is better than painting plien air. We had a wonderful crowd of young minds, enjoyed full day painting sessions, food as well as after hour sessions. Amidst the nature and the enthusiasm of crowd can be summed up in a feeling which can easily be called euphoria

20"x22" mix media,the support is the paper called as duplex board around here has a grey surface.
after initial washes of grass and kind of foliedge I carefully did the tree branches.
the last part was painting the sky in between the branches with thick opaque blue pinkyellows.
why did i paint the branches first and then the sky in between filling negtive areas?

Indeed a door and a wiindow of old Maharashtrian wada is a wonderful subject..i love painting doors and a windows..yet..around here the subject is little too popular these days and becoming kind o clitche.

but why should i worry because the subj. is clitche, if i love to paint it..

But there is always a tiny thought ,this could be more salable..??...who cares...

i call it" door" for sale and paint it happily.

another one on mdf board ..we are always learning.sometimes more we know less spontenious can we be..the learning curve keeps going more and more vertical with more chances to slide downwards..

this was done on a untreated mdp panel in acrylic mixed with some oil pastels now and then.
I like the absorbency of the untrated panel.later one has to treat it with varnish all six sides not to let it go fibers.
today I am thinking why do we keep on painting and go on creating pile of..

Shaniwar peth 10 a.m.

this is a scene which I used to see almost evrery day on my way to studio few years back,I have painted here sitting in a car.this one is from a photo shot long back.the road is no more or never as empty as i have shown.

This must be 33rd attempt of this particular spot. Don’t get surprised, I always do 2-3 attempts of most paintings .this one i do as a demo in my watercolor course to illustrate direct approach as well as various color and light relations. Fortunately I can still amuse myself by trying something new in that each time.

3 girls on FC college road in rain

obviously you can see 3 girls..you can see thay are on the road..you can see it is raining
but for those who dont know the road is FC college road.FC stands for Fergussion College yet not many people call it FC road but FC college road.
Full sheet watrecolor and had to hold my breath controling wet in wet effects..like it?

Moodyscape

Mood and atmosphere in landscape is always assiciated with quality of light painted.
Early morning or evening shots with misty or foggy look with most objlects againt light create a drama of light and we tend to call it mood in the atmosphere.on the other hand wonderful landscapes or busy colorful streetscapes in crystal clear whether or strong sunshine hve differnt mood.they are not as often praised as mood carrying ones.my argument is "mood" is not just against light ,misty atmospheric perspective.anyway..

Wai cross

watercolor for a change on my blog where i 've been mostly uploading acrylic stuff lately.
Arches is really the best watercolor paper available today.It can retain your washes wonderfully even if you go glazing over it many times.

Archway Blue

It is true that many people around here paint their walls blue and as long as it facinates me my blue phase will continue.

Fortunately i was on the right time because soon afterwards the guy in the house also painted the stones around the arch in the blue-paint left with him.
